  real SSL with sendmail

keywords : smtps ssl tls 465 sendmail

SSL and TLS are very similar things but not exactely the same. TLS can be spoken via usual port 25, but standard SSL-port is smtps=465 and there are new mobile clients out there that can only speak SSL but not TLS.

To activate SSL/TLS you follow the steps as described in KB-211, but to make sendmail actually listen on the smtps-port and talk SSL there you need to add the following line to your sendmail.mc:

DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtps, Name=MTA_s, Address=10.1.1.2, M=s')
