windows installer folder eats all harddiskspace

keywords : windows install patch folder disk remove clean software

I've a small windows installed on a 30GB-partition and suddenly the partition was full and when running a used-disk-space-analyze (using freeware WinDirStat) I had to discover that the folder
c:\windows\installer eats up more than 20GB of my harddisk.

Solution is simple: this are orphaned package-files from software-installs and system-updates.

I followed the solution from http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic109060.htmland got 20GB diskspace freeed within 30 seconds:

i) download and start the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
ii) run "msizap G!" it from commandline. it was installed in "C:\Program Files\Windows Installer Clean Up " or "C:\Programme\Windows Installer Clean Up" (on german windows). Dont forget the G! - option !! its mandatory to achieve the goal !!

iii) thats all :)
