convmv

convmv rename filenames from one enocding to another. So if you have a utf8-filename unpacked to an iso-8859-1-filesystem and now have very strange characters in your filename, this will help you:

  • convmv --list show all available encodings
  • convmv -f FROM -t TO filenames will show you what convmv would do
  • convmv --notest -f FROM -t TO filenames will actually do the conversion

  • convmv -t utf8 -f iso-8859-1 --notest *.rar
